Rabi Lamichhane holds talks with Madhes lawmakers as Sunsari tensions spread

A A+ A-

KATHMANDU: Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP) Chairman Rabi Lamichhane held discussions on Wednesday with party lawmakers elected from Madhes Province amid growing concerns that tensions originating in Sunsari are spreading across the Tarai.

According to Lamichhane’s secretariat, the meeting focused on maintaining social harmony and communal peace in the Madhes region. Around 20 lawmakers from Madhes Province participated in the discussion, lawmaker Manish Jha said.

Speaking to reporters at the Parliament building after the meeting, Jha said the lawmakers had informed Lamichhane that Madhes was currently in a security-sensitive situation and that the federal government had not shown sufficient sensitivity to the seriousness of the developments. “Janakpur does not appear safe today,” Jha said. “Shops are closed, markets are shut, and people are burning tires at intersections and staging protests. This is not a pleasant situation for any elected representative.”

He also said the lawmakers felt that the state’s response lacked adequate urgency and active engagement as tensions continued to rise.
