CHITWAN: Eighteen bodies were retrieved from Trishuli and Narayani Rivers in Chitwan. The bodies were swept downstream by the floodwaters from the Bhotekoshi River occurred on Wednesday morning.
The mortal remains were found along the stretch from Kurintaar to Leela Chowk of Narayangadh.
Chief district officer of Chitwan, Ganesh Aryal, said such bodies were recovered as of 6:00 pm today. Security personnel have retrieved the bodies with heightened precautions.
“So far, 18 dead bodies are found, while 12 other mortal remains (hands and legs) collected. We continue to garner further details,” he added.
When the floodwaters reached Narayangadh, the water level has not crossed the danger mark. According to Aryal, Chitwan does not face any risk from the flood at present. The people have been urged to refrain from visiting riverbanks to collect objects carried by the floodwaters.
According to Narayani Basin Field Office Bharatpur’s chief engineer Sumit Adhikari, the water level of the Narayani River at Devghat has started receding. The water level exceeding nine metres is considered dangerous. However, it began declining after peaking at 6.80 metres, indicating that immediate danger appears to have passed.
Until the filing of this report, vehicles en route to Pokhara have been allowed to proceed. However, roadway in Dhading along the Prithvi Highway remains disrupted, said District Traffic Police Office Chitwan’s chief Anil Thapa.
Schools in the areas around the Narayani River were closed in the afternoon citing the flood risk.
