KATHMANDU: Efforts are underway to reopen the BP highway after floods in the Roshi River washed away diversion roads and caused significant blockages.
The Road Division Bhaktapur confirmed that repair work has commenced following a break in the rainfall.
Division Chief Suman Yogesh stated that approximately 1.68 kilometers of the highway sustained damage. Specifically, 300 meters of diversion were washed away at Chaukidanda and Katunje each, along with 100 meters at Mamti and 285 meters at Piple. Additionally, landslides affected 500 meters at Daunne-Kalopul and 100 meters at Char Saybensi.
“We have started work to reconstruct the damaged diversions and facilitate vehicle movement through the inner track of the highway currently under reconstruction,” Yogesh said. Repair teams are currently using three heavy machines at the Katunje section, with officials aiming to restore traffic flow there within a few hours.
The division estimates that it will take approximately 48 hours to fully clear the debris and repair the diversions to resume traffic. Work on the section contracted to JICA is expected to continue until Sunday. While the division had paused reconstruction efforts until Monday due to persistent rain, operations have now resumed. The highway previously suffered extensive damage in the second week of September, affecting a 29-kilometer stretch from Dapcha bridge to Nepalthok.
