KATHMANDU: Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP) lawmaker Amaresh Kumar Singh has questioned why police firing is repeatedly used during protests and unrest in Madhesh Province.
Speaking at Tuesday’s meeting of the House of Representatives, Singh asked why non-lethal methods such as batons and tear gas were not used first.

“I have been a member of Parliament since 2006. My question to the state is this: whether it is a movement of a particular community or the Tharuhat movement, why is live fire always used in Madhesh? Why are batons not used? Why is tear gas not used?” he said.

Singh also claimed that Nepal was the only country where police were equipped with SLR rifles, arguing that police often resort to firing when attacked with stones. “Either the training is inadequate, or a mindset develops within the security forces that they are dealing with a foreign force,” he said. His remarks came during discussions in Parliament on the recent violence and police firing in Sunsari and the broader security situation in the Madhes region.
