KATHMANDU: Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP) lawmaker Amresh Kumar Singh has accused the government of attempting to steer Nepal toward a system resembling North Korea, alleging that it has undermined constitutional values and inclusion.

Speaking at a meeting of the House of Representatives’ State Affairs and Good Governance Committee on Thursday, Singh questioned the government’s intentions and claimed that it was marginalizing Madhesis, Indigenous communities and Dalits.

He also argued that history shows the poor have disproportionately borne the consequences of political conflict, while criticizing what he described as the government’s lack of commitment to national unity.

Singh further said the government had failed to create conditions that would discourage young people from seeking employment abroad, alleging that appointments were being made on the basis of favoritism rather than merit.

Referring to the government’s policies, Singh said he had previously warned that Nepal was being pushed toward becoming “like Pakistan,” but now believed the country was instead being taken in the direction of North Korea.

Drawing on what he described as his 56 years of experience, Singh also claimed that movements in the Madhes and Tharuhat regions had repeatedly been met with the use of gunfire, raising concerns about the state’s handling of such protests.
