KATHMANDU: Nepali Congress leader Dr. Shekhar Koirala is set to participate in a gathering organized by the faction led by former party president Sher Bahadur Deuba.

The Deuba faction has scheduled the gathering for August 14 in Kathmandu, rejecting the legitimacy of the party’s executive committee led by President Gagan Thapa.

Koirala will attend and address the gathering, according to his personal secretary Dinesh Thapaliya. Koirala has not attended any meetings held at the Deuba faction’s contact office in Chundevi, but has agreed to participate in the broader gathering.

Koirala has maintained a centrist role in the party’s ongoing internal dispute. The gathering is being organized under the coordination of Dr. Shashank Koirala.

Former president Deuba is also scheduled to address the gathering. The Deuba faction has gained momentum after the Supreme Court granted permission to review the disputed case concerning the party’s official status.

With the court ordering a review of its earlier decision, the immediate prospect of a party split has receded.
