KATHMANDU: The main opposition party, Nepali Congress, has called on Prime Minister Balendra (Balen) Shah to demonstrate greater accountability toward Parliament and respect democratic practices.
Taking special time during Thursday’s session of the House of Representatives, Nepali Congress Parliamentary Party Leader Bhishmaraj Angdembe presented a nine-point recommendation regarding government operations and parliamentary norms.
Angdembe emphasized the need for the Prime Minister to maintain a regular presence in the House and foster a culture of listening to lawmakers.
He noted that the Prime Minister’s absence while the leader of the main opposition is addressing the House runs contrary to established parliamentary practice.
Questioning the executive’s attitude toward the legislature, Angdembe asserted that Parliament does not operate at the Prime Minister’s personal convenience.
“Coming and sitting when it pleases you, and walking out when it doesn’t—is this the kind of parliamentary practice we are trying to build?” he asked.
He stressed that Parliament is not merely a venue to form a government, but a vital democratic institution tasked with holding the executive accountable.
Reminding the government that the House is a shared platform for both the ruling side and the opposition, Angdembe urged the administration to foster an environment for continuous dialogue on public grievances, policy, and solutions.
