KATHMANDU: Nepali Congress General Secretary Gagan Kumar Thapa has stated that contemporary Nepali politics must shift from cheap populism toward genuine democracy and transition from a performance-oriented style to policy-based reforms.
Speaking at a ceremony held at the party’s central office in Sanepa on Saturday, he asserted that individual charisma might bring temporary excitement, but sustainable societal change is only possible through institutional strengthening.
Thapa emphasized that democratic norms, culture, and institutional efforts are essential to building effective organizations, adding that the Nepali Congress will lead a national debate on these issues.
Expressing concern over the current state of the economy, he noted that the country has remained stagnant for a long time due to low economic growth and weak resource mobilization.
Thapa said, ‘We must steer Nepali politics from populism toward democracy and from superficial politics toward reform-oriented politics.
Individual miracles can bring temporary change, but sustainable and permanent change is only possible through strong and effective institutions.’
He further highlighted the need for a profound review of why the walls of discrimination within Nepali society have not broken down, despite the constitutional guarantees of fundamental rights and social security.
Thapa insisted that the Nepali Congress would not shy away from complex national issues and pledged to establish the party as an ideological force capable of providing answers to the contemporary questions raised by citizens.
