Tourists’ influx on rise in Myagdi

A A+ A-

MYAGDI: Following the repair of the Beni-Jomsom road, tourist activity in Myagdi has seen a notable increase, particularly after the recent festival period.

The improved road conditions, coupled with favorable weather, have facilitated the arrival of tourists to various attractions such as Ghodepani, Punhill, and Annapurna base camp. Local business owners have reported a surge in visitors since the celebration of Bada Dashain, marking a significant recovery from the near-zero tourist traffic experienced when the road was blocked due to recent landslides.

The Beni-Jomsom road, which had been rendered impassable due to adverse weather conditions, has been operational now, allowing for a resurgence in tourism. Historically, October is recognized as a peak month for foreign tourist arrivals in Myagdi.

However, while the number of foreign visitors has not returned to previous levels due to ongoing flood impacts in other regions, there is a strong interest among domestic tourists eager to embark on treks during the Dashain-Tihar holidays. This indicates a gradual recovery in the tourism sector, driven by improved accessibility and seasonal festivities.

The Ghodepani-Punhill-Ghandruk route has been confirmed as safe for travelers, with Punhill serving as a key destination for sunrise views and trekking at an altitude of 3,210 meters, accessible via a 45-minute hike from Ghodepani.

In addition to hiking, natural treatment facilities at Singa Tatopani Kunda and tourism attractions at Bhurung-Tatopani Kunda are highlighted. Singa Tatopani Kunda, which suffered damage from flooding, has recently reopened, while Bhurung-Tatopani and Paudhar Tatopani Kunda are being promoted as rest stops for tourists on the Annapurna trekking route.

Tourism is gradually resuming, with reports of around 150 domestic tourists visiting the Annapurna base camp recently. Local businesses, such as tea shops near the Rupse waterfall complex, are beginning to see an influx of visitors again.

The accessibility to Mustang via various modes of transport through Myagdi is emphasized, suggesting a potential revival of the tourism sector in the region.

Efforts are underway to expedite the reconstruction of damaged roads and footpaths, with local authorities prioritizing repairs to facilitate transportation during the peak tourist season.
