KATHMANDU: Two Indian nationals arriving from Bangkok via Hong Kong were arrested on Tuesday night at Tribhuvan International Airport (TIA) in possession of 18 kilograms of marijuana.

The arrestees have been identified as Sanjeev Kumar, 36, and Rajiv Kumar, 26, both residents of Punjab, India.

According to Superintendent of Police Durga Raj Regmi, spokesperson for the Narcotics Control Bureau, the duo was intercepted at the airport’s arrival customs area.

The suspects had arrived in Nepal aboard a Cathay Pacific flight carrying marijuana produced in Thailand. Upon landing, they attempted to flee by abandoning their luggage at the arrival customs area to avoid arrest.

Preliminary investigations reveal that the pair had planned to smuggle the contraband into India through a local Nepali agent a few days later. Both individuals have been taken into custody for further investigation.
