KATHMANDU: Opposition CPN-UML has said Prime Minister and Home Minister must take moral responsibility for the recent incidents in Sunsari and Biratnagar.
Speaking at Tuesday’s meeting of the House of Representatives, UML lawmaker Guru Baral said citizens had lost their lives due to the government’s failure to maintain law and order.

Baral said the communal tension in Sunsari and the situation that followed had resulted in the deaths of four youths. “Had the authorities acted in time to control the display of weapons and maintain peace and security, this unfortunate situation would not have arisen,” he said, adding that the Prime Minister and the Home Minister should take moral responsibility for the deaths.
Expressing dissatisfaction with the current investigation process, Baral demanded the formation of an independent and empowered commission led by a former judge. He argued that a judicial inquiry was necessary to uncover the real causes of the incident and find a lasting solution.

Baral also objected to the manner in which a raid was carried out on the Devenera Group, a prominent industrial house in Biratnagar.
He further criticized the government over rising inflation, long queues for cooking gas, and what he described as the government’s inability to meet citizens’ basic needs.
