KATHMANDU: Authorities in Kathmandu have begun burying unidentified bodies of victims recovered from the Bhote Koshi flood in Rasuwa after collecting DNA and forensic samples from each body.
The management of the bodies was carried out in a government forest area located in Gokarneshwar, Kathmandu, after the mortuary at the Teaching Hospital ran out of storage space. Officials managed 46 bodies at the site on Monday night, followed by additional burials on Tuesday afternoon.
According to the administration, the government adopted international standard procedures for body management due to the large number of bodies collected from the flood area and limited mortuary capacity, which led to the bodies beginning to decay.
Forensic and DNA samples from each body have been preserved to allow family members to identify their relatives and perform final religious rites in the future.
