NAWALPUR: Authorities are preparing to bury unidentified bodies recovered from the Bhotekoshi flash flood in Nawalpur, with DNA samples to be collected and preserved before burial to facilitate future identification.
Chief District Officer Jagadishwar Upadhyay said authorities were facing difficulties storing the bodies due to limited resources. Prolonged storage could also create sanitation and public health problems, he said.
The bodies will be managed in accordance with the Guidelines on the Management of Unidentified and Unclaimed Bodies, 2083, following a decision by the District Security Committee.
Authorities have selected two community forests in Kawasoti and Devchuli as burial sites. Each body will be buried with an identification number after necessary DNA and other samples are collected and preserved.
According to the District Police Office, 165 bodies had been recovered by 3pm Saturday. Only three have so far been identified and handed over to their families.
The remaining bodies are being kept at various health institutions and holding centres.
Of the 165 bodies recovered, 57 are male, 35 female, 21 children and 52 are body parts.
