DHABUSHA: A woman attempted self-immolation outside the gate of the Dhanusha District Court in Janakpurdham on Wednesday afternoon.
The woman has been identified as 55-year-old Phulkumari Rajak of Janakpurdham Sub-Metropolitan City–3. According to police, she poured petrol over her body in an apparent attempt to set herself on fire.
Police officers stationed at the scene intervened immediately after noticing the petrol being poured and rescued her before any further harm occurred.
Police Inspector Aravind Sah, who was present at the site, said Rajak was rescued promptly by a team under his command.
The incident occurred while detention hearings were underway at the Dhanusha District Court against alleged loan-sharking operators Hareram Shah and Gopal Sah. Victims of exploitative lending practices had been protesting outside the court, demanding that the accused be sent to jail.
Rajak attempted self-immolation during the protest, police said.
Security has since been tightened in and around the Dhanusha District Court premises.
