World Mosquito Day today, 168 species of mosquitoes found in Nepal

KATHMANDU: The World Mosquito Day is being observed in Nepal under the theme ‘Small Bite, Big Challenge’ today. Various programmes are being organised to mark the Day.

This Day is observed to raise public awareness about mosquito-borne diseases and measures to be protected from it. Malaria, dengue, chikungunya, kala-azar, scrub typhus, elephantiasis, Japanese Encephalitis are mosquito-borne diseases.

The presence of 168 species of mosquitoes has been confirmed in Nepal so far. According to the Department of Health Services, 18,710 people were affected from mosquito-borne diseases in Nepal in the last fiscal year.

The Department has been carrying out activities by establishing labs in all seven provinces to control vector-borne diseases.

Chief of Vector-Borne Disease Control Section, Dr Gokarna Dahal, shared that vector-borne diseases are seen in 56 districts in recent period.
