BUTWAL: A total of 416 road accidents occurred in Lumbini province within one month, resulting in 19 deaths and 762 injuries.
According to the Highway Safety and Traffic Management Office in Butwal, the incidents were recorded across 12 districts during the month of Bhadra.
Police reports indicate that the majority of these accidents were caused by speeding and driving under the influence of alcohol. Superintendent of Police (SP) Nishan Thapa, chief of the Highway Safety and Traffic Management Office, stated that reckless driving, speeding, and alcohol consumption are significantly increasing the risk of road accidents.
District-wise data shows that Rupandehi recorded the highest number of accidents with 157 incidents. Other districts reported varying figures: Banke with 85, Kapilvastu with 69, Nawalparasi with 27, Bardiya with 23, Dang with 14, Gulmi with 12, Palpa with 10, Rolpa with 9, Pyuthan with 5, and Arghakhanchi with 4. Eastern Rukum recorded the lowest number of accidents with only one.
Information Officer and Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) Mohajang Budhathapa stated that 10,487 drivers and vehicles were penalized in Bhadra for violating traffic regulations. Action was taken against those found speeding, driving under the influence, driving recklessly, overloading, and modifying motorcycles. Police confirmed that they are conducting regular awareness programs focused on traffic rule compliance and responsible driving to reduce the frequency of accidents.
