KATHMANDU: The Dhauliganga hydroelectric project in Pithoragarh, Uttarakhand, India, is scheduled to open its dam gates for silt cleaning from midnight Sunday until 10 a.m. Monday. The operation is part of routine maintenance for the 280-megawatt facility.
Authorities have issued a warning for residents living along the banks of the Mahakali river, which flows through Darchula, Baitadi, Dadeldhura, and Kanchanpur districts, as water levels are expected to rise significantly. Baitadi Chief District Officer Meena Aryal urged locals to avoid the riverbanks during the specified period.
Under established protocols, Indian officials inform their Nepali counterparts before opening the dam gates. Local administration in Nepal has advised residents to remain vigilant and avoid approaching the river area to prevent potential accidents. The dam was previously opened for similar maintenance work on July 29.
