KATHMANDU: The Road Division Office in Bharatpur is implementing long-term measures to address persistent landslides along the Narayangadh-Mugling road section at Tuilkhola. After the area experienced frequent landslides throughout both the monsoon and winter seasons since last year, authorities have begun clearing large boulders to stabilize the slope using ‘nailing’ technology.
Chief Engineer of the Road Division, Narayan Prasad Lamichhane, stated that crews have been working for the past week to cut and remove hazardous rocks from the upper sections of the slope. He said, ‘seven days ago, work began on cutting and removing large rocks from above. Currently, a small team is working in difficult sections. Once the large rocks are cleared, we plan to deploy more personnel and equipment to advance the work.’
In addition to the nailing technique, the project will incorporate ‘horizontal drains’ to manage groundwater seepage and bioengineering methods to reinforce the terrain. Lamichhane noted that the team will apply two-dimensional and three-dimensional netting based on the slope’s structure. The office aims to complete the nailing work within one month, which is expected to prevent future road blockages.
Traffic management remains in place during the construction period. Between 8:30 a.m. and 6:00 p.m., the road is opened for 30 minutes every two hours. Traffic flows continuously from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 a.m. the following morning.
