KATHMANDU: A total of 677 workers are missing and 515 trucks and containers have been lost following a flood in the Bhotekoshi River in Rasuwa on Aug. 26.
The data was presented by the Federation of Truck Transport Entrepreneurs of Nepal during a meeting coordinated by Department of Transport Management Director General Rajeev Pokharel.
Presenting the preliminary details of human and physical losses, the federation noted that the number of missing workers and lost vehicles could increase. Federation President Rajendra Bikram Baniya stated that the government must assess the actual damage to the transport sector and provide relief and compensation to the affected entrepreneurs and workers.
The Ministry of Infrastructure Development has formed a committee to collect detailed reports of the damage and establish a basis for compensation. The committee was formed following a meeting held on Sept. 11, chaired by the minister with transport entrepreneurs and stakeholders
. The committee is led by Director General Pokharel and includes representatives from the ministry, the minister’s secretariat, transport entrepreneurs, and transport worker unions, alongside Federation President Baniya and General Secretary Badri Prasad Chaulagain. The ministry has tasked the committee with submitting a report with recommendations within 15 days.
