Biotechnologist position to be added at Mustang horticulture center

KATHMANDU: A permanent position for a tissue culture biotechnologist will be created at the Temperate Horticulture Development Centre in Marpha, Mustang, to accelerate the production of hybrid apple saplings. Minister for Agriculture, Forest and Environment Geeta Chaudhary announced the commitment during her site visit to the facility.

Minister Chaudhary, who was in Mustang to inaugurate the Gharpajhong Climate Change Conference-2083, inspected the centre located in Gharpajhong Rural Municipality-2. During the visit, she observed displays of apples, temperate fruits, off-season vegetables, and processed agricultural products.

Centre Chief Prakash Pantha briefed the minister on the necessity of a biotechnologist to advance hybrid apple production, while also highlighting budget constraints and operational challenges. In response, Minister Chaudhary assured that the ministry would take initiatives to resolve issues regarding excise duty on fruit-based alcohol and address the need for additional technical staff.

The minister further stated that the proposal to establish a satellite farm would be discussed at the ministry to be moved forward as a separate project.

Established in 2023 BS, the centre has played a leading role in providing agricultural technology to local farmers in Mustang. The facility, which spans approximately 900 ropanis across four blocks, currently focuses on crop production, scientific research, and capacity building for farmers.
