KATHMANDU: The bodies of two climbers who died in an avalanche on Mount Manaslu are being brought to Kathmandu by helicopter on Monday. The victims, identified as German national of Indian origin Dhruvajyoti Guha and his Nepali climbing guide Phursemba Sherpa, were killed in an avalanche on Saturday night.
According to the Gorkha District Police Office, the avalanche struck while the climbers were sleeping in their tent at Camp 3. Both were buried under approximately seven feet of snow. The climbers were part of an expedition organized by Makalu Adventure Pvt. Ltd.
This incident brings the total death toll on Mount Manaslu this season to four. Previously, 50-year-old Singaporean climber Lau Wei Seng died at Camp 2, and 20-year-old Nepali guide Tashi Sherpa died at the base camp.
Currently, 480 foreign climbers have received permits for the Manaslu expedition this season. Rope fixing for the route has been completed, and other climbers are currently making final preparations for their ascent.
