KATHMANDU: The BP Highway, which has been fully closed due to floods and landslides, is expected to resume operations in two days.
The Road Division Office in Bhaktapur stated that persistent rain and flooding in the Roshi River have hampered repair efforts, delaying the reopening until Tuesday evening.
Division chief Yogesh noted that the destruction of the diversion at Chaukidanda by the river has created significant challenges. “Since the rain has stopped, work on building a new diversion will begin early Monday morning,” he said. The division aims to establish an temporary route by Monday evening. If the Chaukidanda diversion cannot be completed, officials are prepared to demolish a water pump house as a last resort to restore traffic flow.
The flooding in the Roshi River washed away 300 meters of road at Chaukidanda, 300 meters at Katunje, 100 meters at Mamti, and 285 meters at Piple. The floods in the second week of September damaged a 29-kilometer stretch of the BP Highway between Dapcha Bridge and Nepalthok. Reconstruction work is currently underway across four sections in Kavrepalanchok and one section in Sindhuli.
Meanwhile, the Arniko Highway, which was blocked by landslides, reopened for one-way traffic at 1:00 p.m. after debris was cleared from the Dhulikhel-Khawa section. However, the Kavrebhanjyang-Namobuddha road remains closed due to a landslide at Phaskot in Dhulikhel Municipality-11, according to the District Police Office, Kavrepalanchok.
