Chobhar substation to be charged after Dashain festival

A A+ A-

KATHMANDU: The 132/11 kV Chobhar substation, aimed at strengthening and improving the reliability of power supply in the Kathmandu Valley, is nearing completion. Authorities plan to charge and operationalize the facility immediately after the Dashain festival.

A team led by Nepal Electricity Authority (NEA) Executive Director Dirghayu Kumar Shrestha inspected the site in Kirtipur Municipality-6 on Thursday and directed officials to expedite the remaining works. The NEA stated that the substation is crucial for managing the rising electricity demand in the valley during the upcoming winter season.

The substation features two 45 MVA power transformers. One circuit of the Matatirtha-Chobhar section, part of the Thankot-Chapagaun-Bhaktapur 132 kV double circuit transmission line, has already been charged. To distribute power locally, nine 11 kV feeder lines have been installed, with six designated for Kirtipur and three for the Pulchowk area in Lalitpur.

The project, funded by a concessional loan from the Asian Development Bank, is built on 12 ropanis and 12 annas of land previously owned by Himal Cement. The government approved the leasing of this land to the NEA on Jan. 31, 2022. The substation serves as an alternative solution after construction faced obstacles in areas like Khokana, Bungamati, Harisiddhi, and Lamatar. Additionally, the construction of a 4.5 km underground 132 kV transmission line from Chobhar to Patan is being prioritized, alongside ongoing work on a 132 kV substation in Patan.
