KATHMANDU: Continuous rainfall has caused water levels in rivers and streams across the Kathmandu Valley to rise significantly.
Authorities, including security agencies and local administrations, have urged the public to exercise high caution after water levels in the Bagmati, Bishnumati, Hanumante, Manahara, and Balkhu rivers crossed alert thresholds. Police have increased surveillance along riverbanks.
In the Balkhu area, one house is at risk due to ongoing riverbank erosion. Kathmandu Police Spokesperson SP Dan Bahadur Thapa stated that six families residing in the house were relocated to safety through a joint operation by the Kalimati Police Circle and the Kathmandu Metropolitan City. Additionally, police rescued 16 people from the lower parts of Lokanthali following a surge in the Hanumante River.
Valley Traffic Police Office Spokesperson SP Naresh Raj Subedi announced that parking of all vehicles is now prohibited in corridor areas. As water levels have reached the edges of main roads, authorities have begun controlling traffic flow. Vehicles exiting the valley are being held at Thankot, and freight trucks have been stopped in the Balkhu area.
Meanwhile, Home Minister Sudhan Gurung visited Chyasal to inspect the situation. Kathmandu Chief District Officer Ishwor Raj Poudel also conducted an inspection along the Bagmati River to assess potential risks to nearby settlements and structures. Officials have also advised caution near the Chobhar gorge, the valley’s primary water outlet, where flow has increased. With rain expected to continue, residents in coastal areas are advised to remain vigilant for the next few days.
