KATHMANDU: Janata Samajbadi Party (JSP) co-chair Sharad Singh Bhandari has stated that any attempt to restrict democracy will not be accepted by the Nepali people.
Addressing the inaugural session of the Nepali Congress 15th general convention in Kathmandu on Sunday, he emphasized that a controlled democracy cannot be the destiny of the nation.
Bhandari noted that the country is currently grappling with natural disasters, economic crises, and political instability. Under these challenging circumstances, he stressed the urgent need for dialogue and cooperation among political parties. He asserted that collective unity is essential to safeguard democracy, the constitution, and national integrity.
‘Controlled democracy cannot be the destiny of the Nepali people. The Nepali people will not accept any contraction of democracy,’ he said. Bhandari highlighted that the internal debates, decisions, and leadership changes within the Nepali Congress hold significant weight for the broader national political landscape.
Defining national interest, unity, democracy, socialism, and the protection of the constitution as shared goals, he urged all political parties to work together to protect these achievements. He expressed his belief that the new leadership and policies resulting from the Nepali Congress convention would address the hopes and expectations of the public, noting that protecting democratic gains is a collective responsibility rather than the duty of a single party.
