KATHMANDU: A total of Rs 11,648,627 has been collected in Dhankuta to support victims of the devastating floods that struck the Bhotekoshi River on Aug. 26. The funds were raised through contributions from local levels, elected representatives, government employees, political parties, schools, and local residents.
Mahalaxmi Municipality has decided to contribute Rs 4,148,229 for relief, rescue, and rehabilitation efforts. Mayor Dhruvaraj Rai stated that the funds were sourced from the disaster management fund, contributions from representatives, and salary deductions from municipal staff and teachers. Similarly, Pakhribas Municipality has pledged Rs 3,023,614, according to Mayor Gyan Bahadur Gurung. Sangurigadhi Rural Municipality has also announced a contribution of Rs 3 million.
While three local levels have formally decided on their contributions, the remaining four in the district are expected to hold meetings soon to finalize their support. Additionally, 11 private schools under PABSON collected Rs 876,021, the Dhankuta Construction Entrepreneurs Association contributed Rs 111,111, and the Nepali Congress district committee has raised Rs 418,432. Furthermore, Rs 71,220 was collected through public performances of traditional Lakhe dance in the local market. All collected funds are set to be deposited into the Prime Minister’s Disaster Relief Fund.
