Escaped prisoner arrested in Kathmandu for Rs 13.9 million fraud

KATHMANDU: Police have arrested a man accused of defrauding people of more than Rs 13.9 million by presenting fake gold as genuine. The suspect, identified as 28-year-old Anish Thapa Magar, a native of Okhaldhunga currently residing in New Bus Park, Kathmandu, was taken into custody on Sunday.

According to the District Police Range, Kathmandu, a team from the Gongabu police station apprehended Thapa Magar at a guesthouse in Tokha Municipality-9. During the arrest, officials recovered 856 grams of a yellow metal, which appeared to be fake gold, from his possession.

Authorities revealed that Thapa Magar was a convict serving time for a rape case. He had escaped from Nakkhu Prison on Aug. 24, 2025, during the Gen-Z movement. The Kathmandu District Court has granted police a five-day remand to continue their investigation into the fraud and escape charges.
