Foreign minister Khanal arrives in Fiji for climate summit

KATHMANDU: Minister for Foreign Affairs Shishir Khanal has arrived in Fiji to participate in the Pre-COP leaders’ event focused on climate change. A Nepali delegation led by the minister reached Fiji on Monday, according to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

The event is scheduled to take place in Fiji and Tuvalu on Oct. 5 and 6. Minister Khanal is set to address the leaders’ plenary session on Oct. 6. Prior to the session, he will participate in a media interaction attended by the president of Palau and the prime ministers of Australia and Fiji. The participation aims to highlight the impacts of climate change, climate justice and the concerns of mountainous nations on the international stage.

Following the conclusion of the events in Fiji and Tuvalu, Minister Khanal will travel to Australia. He is scheduled to hold a bilateral meeting with Australian Foreign Minister Penny Wong on Oct. 8 to discuss Nepal-Australia relations and matters of mutual interest. During his visit to Australia, the minister will also interact with the Nepali community at events organized by the Nepali Embassy in Canberra and members of the diaspora in Sydney. Minister Khanal is scheduled to return to Nepal on Oct. 12.
