KATHMANDU: Gen-Z leader Miraj Dhungana has submitted a memorandum to Home Minister Sudan Gurung, seeking clarification over the police’s claim that former Chief Justice Cholendra Shumsher Rana received threats from Gen-Z youths.

Dhungana sent the memorandum by email to the Ministry of Home Affairs and concerned officials on Monday, demanding that the authorities make public the facts, sources and legal procedures related to the alleged threats.

In the memorandum, Dhungana stressed that “Gen-Z” does not refer to an individual, gang or group, but to a specific age cohort. He said an estimated 7.2 million people in Nepal belong to the Gen-Z age group and that they are associated with different political parties, campaigns and educational institutions, ranging from Grade 10 to master’s degree programs.

“Blaming Gen-Z amounts to accusing the entire 7.2 million citizens, including minors,” the memorandum stated, calling for clarification on the matter.

Dhungana has sought an official response from the Home Ministry on six key issues, including whether Rana actually received threats, the official source and nature of the alleged threats, the basis for identifying the perpetrators as members of Gen-Z, and the findings of the police investigation.

He has also asked the ministry to clarify the legal basis for initiating proceedings against any individual or group responsible for the threats, as well as its position on the implications of placing the entire Gen-Z generation under suspicion.

Citing constitutional guarantees of the rule of law and individual freedom, Dhungana said that linking an incident to an entire generation or community without an investigation and official conclusion could create unnecessary confusion and mistrust.

He urged the Home Minister and relevant state agencies to release a fact-based official statement at the earliest to address public uncertainty and concerns.
