KATHMANDU: Global fuel prices have surged as the ongoing conflict between the United States and Iran disrupts energy supplies. With crude oil prices exceeding 100 US dollars per barrel, the impact is being felt across transportation, agriculture, and industrial sectors worldwide.

In Syria, protests have erupted against the government of President Bashar al-Assad following a 40 percent hike in diesel prices and a 25 percent increase in petroleum gas costs. Demonstrators have blocked major highways and demanded the resignation of government officials.

Guatemala is also facing widespread protests, with truck drivers and indigenous groups blocking highways to demand price controls. The country’s parliament is currently considering a proposal to cap fuel prices through the end of the year.

In Portugal, business owners and workers held demonstrations in the coastal city of Espinho, gathering near Prime Minister Luis Montenegro’s residence to protest the rising cost of living. The government has since announced a support package for transport, taxi, and fire services.

French fishermen in the city of Fos-sur-Mer blocked a major fuel depot on Tuesday, citing unsustainable operating costs and the negative impact of high fuel prices on their industry. Mayor Philippe Maurizo urged the government to take immediate action to support the sector.

In the Philippines, transport workers organized a strike to demand fuel subsidies and the removal of taxes on petroleum products. Students and laborers in Manila have also held multiple protests. Energy Secretary Sharon S. Garin stated that rising fuel costs are severely affecting household budgets and business operations.

The energy crisis is placing significant economic pressure on nations reliant on oil imports, leading to increased trade deficits and heightened government spending. The protests across these nations highlight that the fuel price hike is no longer just an energy market issue, but a critical factor affecting the daily lives of citizens.
