KATHMANDU: The government has announced immediate relief on electricity services for families and businesses affected by floods in Rasuwa, Nuwakot and Dhading. The relief measures target customers whose homes, businesses and industries suffered damage due to the recent flooding in the Bhote Koshi river.
Minister for Energy, Water Resources and Irrigation, Biraj Bhakta Shrestha, stated that the decision aims to provide a sense of relief to affected citizens during the disaster. He noted that the initiative follows the principle of providing support to neighbors, ensuring that revenue collected from other customers is partially utilized to assist the affected families.
The board of directors of the Nepal Electricity Authority has decided to waive minimum electricity billing for affected customers starting from August. Furthermore, the authority will cancel the registration of electricity meters for damaged homes, businesses and industries. Affected customers who require new connections will be provided with meters free of charge.
The authority is currently in the process of restoring electricity services across 15 flood-affected municipalities. Meanwhile, management has been directed to study the feasibility of providing additional tariff discounts or concessions for these areas. A proposal based on this study is expected to be finalized within the week. This facilitation is intended to ease the immediate financial burden on citizens whose properties and businesses were damaged by the floods.
