KATHMANDU: CPN-UML parliamentary party leader Ram Bahadur Thapa ‘Badal’ has accused the government of moving towards a fascist path, citing its recent working style and the arrest of a former prime minister. Thapa made the remarks during Friday’s session of the House of Representatives.
Thapa claimed that instead of using Parliament as a platform for effective dialogue and consensus, the ruling party has been imposing decisions based on its numerical strength. He alleged that the government has failed to provide sufficient space for opposition suggestions during the legislative process over the past six months. He stated, ‘The democratic process should be based on dialogue and consensus, but the ruling party has been pushing through bills based on the arrogance of numbers and power.’
Regarding his party’s performance in the last election, Thapa said they accepted the defeat as part of a democratic exercise. ‘The acceptance of defeat is not a surrender; we have taken this as an opportunity for future victory,’ he said.
Thapa also discussed global shifts, noting that rapid developments in science, technology, artificial intelligence, and climate change are shaping a new world order. He observed that the global power center is shifting from the West to the East and that the process of transferring leadership and rule-setting is underway. He urged for a thorough analysis of national and international political, economic, and cultural developments to address the current crisis in Nepal.
The current session of the House of Representatives concluded at midnight on Friday. President Ram Chandra Paudel prorogued the session upon the recommendation of the government.
