KATHMANDU: The Department of Hydrology and Meteorology reported on Friday evening that the country is currently under the influence of monsoon winds and a partial effect of westerly winds.
A low-pressure system currently situated near northern Maharashtra and Chhattisgarh in India is expected to move north-northwest and weaken over the next 24 hours.
Tonight, moderate rainfall and snowfall accompanied by thunder and lightning are expected in most Himalayan regions of Gandaki, Lumbini, Karnali, and Sudurpashchim provinces, as well as many hilly and mountainous areas of Koshi and Bagmati provinces. Similar weather conditions are likely in most hilly and plain areas of Gandaki, Lumbini, and Sudurpashchim, as well as parts of the Terai in Madhesh and Koshi provinces.
The department has warned that heavy to very heavy rainfall is possible in a few locations across Bagmati, Gandaki, Lumbini, Karnali, and Sudurpashchim provinces. Specifically, one or two locations in Lumbini and Sudurpashchim provinces may experience extreme rainfall. Additionally, gusty winds are expected in parts of Madhesh province and the Terai regions of Bagmati, Gandaki, and Lumbini.
Meteorologists define extreme rainfall as precipitation exceeding 200 millimeters within a 24-hour period. The department also clarified that forecasts indicating rain in most areas signify a probability of precipitation covering more than 80 percent of the region.
