KATHMANDU: Apple farmers in Jumla have begun receiving custom-branded packaging cartons at a 50 percent subsidy, a move aimed at establishing a distinct market identity for the region’s produce.

Previously, Jumli apples were packed in Indian or Chinese cartons, which often obscured their local origin and brand identity in national markets. The Prime Minister Agriculture Modernization Project (PMAMP) in Jumla is now distributing cartons labeled specifically as ‘Jumli Apple’.

Project information officer Padamraj Karki stated that 9,743 cartons have been distributed to 26 farmers, cooperatives, and traders so far. While each carton costs Rs 100, farmers pay only Rs 50 after the government subsidy.

Applicants must provide business registration, PAN, and tax clearance certificates to qualify for the support. The project has allocated Rs 974,300 for the procurement, with the government covering half of the cost.

Additionally, the District Agriculture Development Office is managing the distribution of 25,000 more cartons to further support the branding initiative.

Official Deepak Singh Dhami confirmed that 13,000 units have already reached the district, with another 12,000 in transit. Commercial apple farming in Jumla now spans 4,497 hectares, involving 19,150 households across the district.

Jumla has set an export target of Rs 700 million for the current fiscal year 2083/084. In the previous fiscal year 2082/083, the district exported apples valued at Rs 412.08 million.

Officials expect that improved packaging will reduce post-harvest damage during transportation and help establish Jumli apples as a premium brand in the market.
