Kathmandu Metropolitan City to establish city library and museum

A A+ A-

KATHMANDU: Kathmandu Metropolitan City is set to establish and operate a city library and a city museum. Acting Mayor Sunita Dangol stated that the metropolis will manage these facilities directly as they are linked to the city’s identity.

Namraj Dhakal, head of the metropolitan education department, said that work is currently underway regarding the infrastructure and management aspects of the projects. Pradip Bajracharya, an assistant expert at the Urban Planning Commission, explained that the library is envisioned as more than just a place to store and read books. The plan is to develop it into a knowledge hub, innovation center, community learning space, cultural heritage archive, and digital learning center, while also serving as a research and information hub.

The metropolitan city plans to develop these libraries as reading corners at the ward level. These will be integrated into a network connecting school-based community libraries and other institutional libraries. Under this concept, citizens will be able to use a single metropolitan library card to borrow books, access study rooms, use the internet, and participate in various community programs.
