KATHMANDU: Lawmakers in the National Assembly have urged the government to announce a special relief and rehabilitation package for victims of floods and landslides across various districts.

During the special session of the National Assembly on Thursday, representatives highlighted the urgent need for a coordinated response to the ongoing disaster.

Nepali Congress lawmaker Kiran Babu Shrestha called for the integration of federal, provincial, and local mechanisms to manage the crisis effectively. He urged the government to restore critical infrastructure, including roads, bridges, electricity, and communication services, which have been severely damaged. Shrestha particularly noted the devastation in Gandaki Province, where agricultural and tourism sectors have suffered, and requested alternative supply routes due to the blockage of northern border points.

Nepal Communist Party lawmaker Suresh Kumar Ale Magar expressed concerns over the loss of life and property in districts including Manang, Myagdi, Parbat, Baglung, and Palpa. He advocated for the inclusion of indigenous knowledge in disaster management. Furthermore, he urged the government to initiate efforts to lift the FIFA suspension on the All Nepal Football Association (ANFA). He also questioned the detention of former Chief Justice Cholendra Shumsher Rana and demanded that the National Human Rights Commission make public the statements taken by police.

CPN-UML lawmaker Ram Kumari Jhakri drew attention to the damage caused by the Bhote Koshi flood in Rasuwa. She emphasized that the state’s primary responsibility lies in search and rescue operations, particularly in identifying missing persons and handling remains for families. She stressed that the government must move beyond immediate relief to focus on long-term rehabilitation, housing, and livelihood restoration for the displaced.

During the session, lawmakers also demanded that the government ensure good governance and remain accountable to the parliament and the public. They further suggested improving road infrastructure and intensifying market monitoring ahead of the upcoming festivals.
