Man dies while in police custody in Morang

KATHMANDU: A 55-year-old man died while undergoing treatment on Tuesday morning after being found unconscious in police custody in Morang. Balram Koirala, a resident of Biratnagar Metropolitan City-14, was declared dead at Nobel Teaching Hospital.

According to Morang police, Koirala was arrested on Monday night for gambling. On Tuesday morning at approximately 7:30 a.m., fellow detainees found him unresponsive while attempting to wake him for tea. He was initially taken to Koshi Hospital and subsequently referred to Nobel Teaching Hospital, where doctors declared him dead at 11 a.m.

Police stated that officers arrived at the residence of Lalu Paswan in Biratnagar-6 on Monday night following reports of gambling. A commotion ensued as the group attempted to flee, during which Koirala fell. Police noted that Koirala had previously undergone head surgery following a road accident. During the same police operation, 41-year-old Chandan Mukhiya jumped from the second floor of the building. He sustained a broken right leg and is currently receiving treatment at Shree Hospital in Biratnagar under police surveillance.

Authorities seized gambling materials and Rs 48,395 in cash from the scene. Eight individuals were initially detained; following Koirala’s death and the hospitalization of Mukhiya, the remaining six individuals remain in custody at the District Police Office, Morang. Police are continuing their investigation into the incident.
