Monkey attacks leave 40 injured in Nepalgunj

A A+ A-

KATHMANDU: Residents of Nepalgunj are facing a growing threat from monkeys, with numerous reports of the animals entering homes and shops to attack locals. The surge in monkey-related incidents has caused significant alarm in the area.

According to Bheri Hospital, 40 people have sought medical treatment after being bitten by monkeys over the past month and a half. Dr. Badri Chapagain, who is studying animal bite cases at the hospital, noted that while bites from dogs, cats, and snakes are common, the rise in incidents of monkeys entering homes to attack people is a concerning new trend.

Local resident Pravez Khan reported that a group of monkeys entered his home, causing damage, and attacked three of his family members when they attempted to drive them away. Similarly, Ramesh Sony from Idgah Road in Nepalgunj-11 said he was injured while trying to remove a group of monkeys from his property. The animals have been moving in packs, damaging shops and houses across the city.

Dr. Nabin Darnal, medical superintendent at Bheri Hospital, stated that these urban monkey attacks are an unusual occurrence for the facility. The hospital is treating victims by administering rabies vaccines, treating them as wild animal bite cases, and ensuring that necessary medical care is provided to all affected individuals.

Locals have urged the Nepalgunj Sub-Metropolitan City to address the issue. Mayor Prashant Bista stated that the local government is currently developing a plan to protect residents from the ongoing monkey menace. Medical professionals have advised anyone bitten by a monkey to seek immediate medical attention.
