KATHMANDU: National Assembly Chair Narayan Prasad Dahal has urged citizens and stakeholders to remain on high alert due to the forecast of heavy rainfall across the country.
Citing a special bulletin from the Department of Hydrology and Meteorology, Dahal warned that the impact of rain is expected to be significant from September 25 to 27.
A low-pressure system developing in the Bay of Bengal has raised concerns regarding soil erosion, floods, landslides, and inundation. Addressing the National Assembly on Thursday, Dahal stated, ‘I appeal to everyone to stay informed through official channels, avoid travel unless absolutely necessary, and refrain from staying in high-risk areas, keeping in mind the danger of potential loss of life and property from natural disasters.’
Dahal warned that the rainfall could lead to flooding in the Terai region, a rise in water levels in rivers, and disruptions to both road and air transport. He urged all concerned parties to remain prepared for potential emergencies. Furthermore, he directed government mechanisms to remain active for risk mitigation and response efforts.
‘Government mechanisms at the federal, provincial, and local levels must be kept in a state of full readiness for risk reduction,’ he said. ‘I direct all concerned parties to coordinate with civil society, non-governmental organizations, and local communities to inform citizens about disaster risks and enhance public awareness.’ Dahal added that learning from past disaster events, proactive caution remains the best measure to minimize the loss of life and property.
