KATHMANDU: The National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Authority has issued a high alert for heavy rainfall across Nepal, urging citizens to remain vigilant for three days.
According to a special weather bulletin from the Department of Hydrology and Meteorology, heavy to extremely heavy rainfall accompanied by thunderstorms and gusty winds is expected in parts of Gandaki and Lumbini provinces from Friday, Sept. 25, to Sunday, Sept. 27.
The authority stated that regions in Koshi, Madhesh, Bagmati, and Sudurpashchim provinces are also likely to experience moderate to heavy rainfall during this period. A low-pressure system currently developing over the central-northern Bay of Bengal is intensifying into a deep depression and moving in a west-northwest direction. This system is expected to bring rainfall to parts of Koshi, Bagmati, and Gandaki provinces starting Wednesday.
The authorities warned of potential flash floods in rivers and streams, landslides, debris flow, and waterlogging in urban and Terai areas. Residents have been advised to avoid travel at night unless necessary. Local governments, security forces, and volunteers have been directed to remain on standby for emergency response and to relocate residents from high-risk areas to safer locations. Heavy machinery, including dozers and excavators, must be kept ready along vulnerable highway sections.
