KATHMANDU: The Nepali Congress is set to hold its local level conventions simultaneously across the country tomorrow, Sept. 23, as part of its 15th general convention. The process, which began with ward-level conventions on Sept. 19, has now entered the phase of electing new local leadership.
The party’s central election committee stated that leadership selection at the ward level has been completed in a peaceful and enthusiastic manner, with only a few exceptions. The committee expressed confidence that the upcoming local conventions will also proceed smoothly. Despite challenges posed by natural disasters, the committee has maintained its organizational schedule. Conventions have been completed in Nuwakot, Dhading, and remaining wards in Siraha, Saptari, Sarlahi, and Parsa districts. However, the committee has decided to postpone the convention in Rasuwa district by a few days due to significant damage caused by floods and landslides, according to committee member secretary Raju Katuwal.
The committee clarified that minor delays in finalizing membership lists were due to technical data management challenges rather than political disputes. Under the party’s new statute, each local convention will elect a chairperson, two vice-chairpersons, a secretary, and a joint-secretary. The treasurer will be nominated by the chairperson from among the elected committee members. To ensure inclusivity, additional members will be nominated to the local working committees based on the specific structures of rural, municipal, sub-metropolitan, and metropolitan committees, with priority given to underrepresented communities.
