KATHMANDU: The Nepal stock market has returned to its downward trend. On Wednesday, the Nepal Stock Exchange (NEPSE) index fell by 21.19 points to close at 2612.42 points.
This decline follows a significant gain of 48.57 points on Tuesday, when the index reached 2633.62 points.
Trading volume also saw a sharp decline on Wednesday. After reaching Rs 8 billion on Tuesday, the total turnover dropped to Rs 5.38 billion. Additionally, the number of shares traded decreased from over 20 million on Tuesday to 15 million on Wednesday, according to the Nepal Stock Exchange.
The market had shown optimism on Tuesday following the government’s announcement of a new action plan aimed at market reform. However, that momentum failed to sustain.
In Wednesday’s trading session, the share prices of 225 companies declined, while only 42 companies recorded gains. The prices of 12 companies remained unchanged.
The maximum decline rate recorded on Wednesday was 7.73 percent, while the maximum gain reached 6.37 percent. The highest single-stock turnover during the day was Rs 370 million. While all sectors had performed positively on the previous day, the market turned red across the board on Wednesday.
