KATHMANDU: The construction of a new track at the Krishnabhir section of the Prithvi Highway, which was obstructed by flooding in the Bhote Koshi river, has been completed. The Department of Roads confirmed that trial operations began on Sept. 13, with full two-way traffic set to resume on Thursday, Oct. 1.
Suresh Paudel, senior divisional engineer and project coordinator for the Nagdhunga-Naubise-Mugling road section, stated that the track was built following a technical assessment by the department and the Nepal Geotechnical Society.
The new 250-meter-long track was carved into the hillside, requiring an excavation 35 meters high and 20 meters deep into the mountain. A team of 50 technical personnel worked 12 to 16 hours daily to complete the project.
Work is currently underway to finish graveling, drainage construction, and structural reinforcement, with graveling expected to conclude by Sept. 16. To mitigate risks from future landslides or debris, the department has stationed heavy equipment on-site and installed surface drainage systems to manage water seepage from the mountain. Additionally, cracks identified in the slope will be sealed using chemicals and plastic covers to prevent water ingress.
To enhance safety, the department is coordinating with local authorities to install street lighting and reflective traffic markers for night travel.
The road had been completely blocked since Sept. 14, when a second flood event destroyed the protective wall at the Krishnabhir section following initial damage on Sept. 10.
