KATHMANDU: Prime Minister Balendra Shah has urged the public to remain on high alert due to forecasts of heavy to extremely heavy rainfall and strong winds expected across the country from Sept. 25 to 27. Currently on a visit to the United States, the prime minister stated via social media on Thursday that preparedness and vigilance are the cornerstones of disaster management.

The government has directed chief district officers across all 77 districts to maintain high alert. The Nepal Army, Nepal Police, and Armed Police Force have been placed on standby, with security personnel conducting awareness campaigns along riverbanks. Prime Minister Shah advised against traveling on highways at night and cautioned against unnecessary long-distance travel. A ‘stop, wait, and look’ policy has been implemented for highway travel to ensure road safety.

All 753 local levels have been instructed to convene disaster management committee meetings and relocate residents from high-risk settlements to safer areas. Authorities have been directed to consider suspending school classes and exams on Sept. 25 as needed. Government employees have been ordered to remain available for disaster response, even during public holidays. Hospitals and health centers are instructed to keep medical personnel and supplies ready, with the Health Emergency Operation Center now active.

Businesses have been asked to coordinate with tourism operators to ensure the safety of trekkers and climbers. Additionally, the Food Management and Trading Company has been directed to maintain stock levels, while market monitoring has been intensified to prevent artificial shortages or price gouging. Citizens are advised to follow official updates from the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Authority and the Department of Hydrology and Meteorology.
