KATHMANDU: Authorities have filed cases against 35 individuals for disturbing public order and harassing tourists in the Thamel area. According to Superintendent of Police Dan Bahadur Thapa, spokesperson for the Kathmandu Valley Police Office, the suspects are being investigated for indecent behavior and have been remanded in custody for five days by the District Administration Office, Kathmandu.
The police operation took place on the morning of Aug. 30, between 1 a.m. and 5 a.m., targeting public spaces and streets in Thamel, Kathmandu Metropolitan City-26. Officers initially detained 59 individuals during the surveillance operation. Following preliminary investigations, 35 people-13 men and 22 women-were formally charged for their involvement in illicit activities.
Investigators stated that the suspects were involved in soliciting tourists and the general public to engage in drug use and sexual activities. They are also accused of harassing individuals and behaving in an indecent manner. According to police, many of the suspects acted as intermediaries for nightlife businesses in the area, including dance bars, dohori restaurants, and clubs.
The suspects were apprehended based on evidence or suspicion of involvement in fights, immoral activities, and actions that disrupted public peace and order in the popular tourist district.
