LISBON: Tanka Sapkota, a Nepali chef based in Portugal, has contributed Rs 5 million 111 thousand and 151 in aid of survivors of the Bhotekoshi flash flood of August 26.
Sapkota deposited the amount into the Prime Minister Natural Disaster Relief Fund on Wednesday for the rescue, relief, and rehabilitation of citizens affected by the devastating flood.
Nepali Ambassador to Portugal, Prakash Mani Paudel, praised Sapkota’s monetary support, saying that the assistance for the relief and rescue of citizens affected by natural disasters is commendable and inspiring.
“During times of crisis, Sapkota’s philanthropic spirit and humanitarian support toward the motherland and disaster-affected citizens have sent a positive message of social responsibility,” Ambassador Paudel said.
Sapkota shared that the amount was given from his family to help, even a little, in the rescue, relief, and rehabilitation of citizens affected by the flood.
Sapkota from Damek of Baglung has been living in Portugal for the past 30 years. He has been running four restaurants in the capital Lisbon – three Italian and one Nepali. Sapkota has also received dozens of awards and honors in recognition to his outstanding culinary arts.
He has also been helping the needy during various natural disasters and humanitarian crises in the past. During the Covid-19 pandemic, he also provided free meals to about 10,000 people in the capital, Lisbon.
