KATHMANDU: Prime Minister Balendra Shah has urged citizens to remain on high alert as the risk of floods, landslides, and lightning continues across the country.

Since Sept. 25, at least 21 people have died in districts including Myagdi, Dolpa, Dhanusha, Palpa, Baglung, Lamjung, Rukum West, Kavre, Dhading, Makawanpur, and Surkhet due to incessant rains and monsoon-related disasters.

The prime minister expressed his condolences to the bereaved families and confirmed that free medical treatment has been arranged for the five injured individuals. Official data shows 439 monsoon-related incidents nationwide, with five people reported missing.

Authorities are currently gathering details on individuals missing following an avalanche in Manang. Prime Minister Shah emphasized that protecting citizens is the government’s primary duty, noting that security personnel are working around the clock to search for the missing and rescue those trapped in floodwaters. Temporary housing is being provided in coordination with local authorities. Infrastructure damage is widespread, affecting major routes such as the Prithvi Highway, BP Highway, and Kanti Lokmarg, alongside several bridges.

The government is committed to repairing these roads and restoring traffic flow as quickly as possible. The energy sector has also faced significant disruption, with 1,013.2 MW of electricity supply halted due to issues along the Kaligandaki, Marsyangdi, and Seti-Madi corridors. Technical teams have been deployed to restore power. Rising water levels in the Mahakali, Narayani, Seti, and Kamala rivers have prompted warnings for residents in coastal areas.

Cross-border traffic at Gaddachauki in Kanchanpur has also been suspended as a precaution. Addressing the crisis, the prime minister warned that the government is monitoring for any spread of misinformation or instances of price gouging. He advised citizens to avoid non-essential travel and to contact the toll-free number 1234 in case of emergencies.
