KATHMANDU: Former Nepali Congress vice president Purna Bahadur Khadka has distanced himself from the faction led by former party president Sher Bahadur Deuba. Following increased internal polarization after the special general convention, Khadka has stopped participating in the group’s meetings.
Khadka has stated that he prefers to focus on achieving consensus within the party rather than escalating internal disputes. In a recent consultation with over 20 leaders, he made it clear that he would not support any activities aimed at splitting the party or holding parallel conventions.
Leader Ramhari Khatiwada confirmed that Khadka is now seeking dialogue with party president Gagan Thapa to find a resolution. ‘He is not in favor of splitting the party,’ Khatiwada said. ‘He is focused on discussing matters with the party president to ensure consensus.’
Khadka shifted his strategy after the Supreme Court did not issue an order to halt the party’s general convention. Since the Deuba faction appointed Dr. Shashank Koirala as its coordinator, Khadka has completely withdrawn from the group’s activities. Reports suggest he still maintains the support of 25 to 30 central members from the 14th general convention.
Meanwhile, party president Gagan Thapa and leader Dr. Shekhar Koirala held a meeting to discuss the party’s internal situation. Both leaders emphasized that the Nepali Congress must remain united given the current national circumstances. Thapa expressed his willingness to work toward party unity, and Khadka is reportedly preparing to play a role in mediating these internal differences.
