KATHMANDU: Minister for Communication and Information Technology Dr. Bikram Timilsina stated that repair work on telecommunication infrastructure damaged by recent floods has been significantly expedited.
Addressing the House of Representatives on Wednesday, Minister Timilsina reported that the telecommunications sector suffered physical damage amounting to approximately Rs 88.5 million due to floods in the Bhotekoshi and other regions.
The minister emphasized that restoring telecommunication services in flood-affected areas remains a priority. According to Timilsina, three Nepal Telecom towers were completely destroyed by the Bhotekoshi floods. He noted that service continuity was maintained by deploying alternative towers. In the Rasuwagadhi area, equipment was transported via helicopter to bring a tower equipped with a solar power system into operation.
The recent floods damaged a total of 291 sites across 11 districts in Gandaki Province. Of these, 246 sites have already been restored. The remaining 45 sites are expected to resume operations once power supply is restored. The ministry has coordinated with the Ministry of Energy to deploy technical teams and generators to facilitate this process.
Speaking to the House, Minister Timilsina said, ‘Along with telecommunication services, we are gradually repairing damages to the fiber network and backbone transmission. In areas where fiber lines were severed, we have provided services alternatively using microwave technology.’
