KATHMANDU: The ruling Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP) has directed the government to investigate incidents involving police entering newsrooms and questioning journalists over media reports.
It has sought action from the government against those responsible for such incidents.
A meeting of the RSP Secretariat held on Saturday at the party headquarters urged the government not to compromise with anyone engaged in incidents that undermine press freedom and to take action against those responsible, said the party Spokesperson and former Communications Minister Jagadish Kharel.
Speaking after the meeting, Kharel said the RSP respects press freedom, freedom of expression, rule of law and human rights. He reiterated that the party would not compromise on these principles under any circumstances.
The meeting also called on the government to ensure prompt action regarding the incidents, stressing the need to uphold its commitment to protecting the rights of journalists and media.
The RSP made it clear incidents involving the violations of press freedom, the arrest of journalists or interference in the work of media houses, publishers and media personnel should not recur.
also stressed that no journalists, publishers, or media house should face such sorts of situation in the days ahead just for simply publishing the news.
It is noted that a few journalists were taken under the police control on Friday and were released later.
